Mediation

Introduction

Nau Ivanow sees mediation as an organic process of constant research and review. A flexible space that listens to the communities around us with a view to exploring new forms of relationships and dialogue through art.

Nau regards itself as a mediator, and seeks to build bridges between artistic language  and community life, amplifying what goes on inside and outside the space.

  1. Art and education

We believe that education drives change and that the arts can open up new ways for us to imagine other possible futures.

Artistic methodologies invite us to do, think and feel in other ways; they lead us to experiment, they foster critical thinking and help us to express ourselves in our own way.

To us, art is a way of thinking, a tool for the collective creation and generation of knowledge. This is why we wish to bring performing arts and the creative process closer to the educational community by sharing resources and working together to tackle the challenges now facing education.

To this end, we develop three main lines:

  • Workshops and one-off visits for schools from our territory
  • Escena en Joc, a long-term project in which we work with a school for a four-year period.

Escena en joc – Performing arts at school

Escena en joc is Nau Ivanow’s main art and education project. It is a four-year collaboration between the creative centre and a school from our territory, geared towards integrating performing arts into the school’s day-to-day life, proposing art as a methodological learning tool.

The project involves the entire educational community – teachers, children and families – and is intended to consolidate itself in the school and to make a significant mark on its educational setting.

 This project offers:

  • Training for the teaching staff. Hands-on sessions with performing arts professionals to learn different artistic methodologies and to encourage staff to think about the relationship between art and education
  • In-class sessions with artists. Workshops for children led by professionals from different areas of performing arts, discovering the different phases of artistic creation and exploring the creative process as a learning tool.
  • Collaboration with families. Joint proposals for the whole family to encourage their active participation and to strengthen the bonds between the space and the school.
  • Connection with the city’s artistic environment.  We generate contexts in which the educational community can forge bonds with the artistic life of Nau Ivanow through workshops, meetings, open rehearsals…  We also offer assessment on outings and trips for children to discover different cultural languages and spaces within the city. We also share a monthly cultural agenda packed with quality proposals with their families.

Accompaniment is a recurring element in the project, underpinning all our lines of work. We therefore strive to build an active and sustained relationship with the school’s educational community based on listening and dialogue between the centre’s pedagogical knowledge and Nau Ivanow’s artistic experience. This collaboration allows us to work towards a sustainable project, one adapted to the school’s specific reality and needs.

Territory

We believe that a cultural space is meaningful when it takes its context into account, and also that a connection with the territory is essential, both for the environment and for the artistic sector.

We therefore strive to build a solid and sustainable proximity network, committing to long-term relationships based on trust and active listening to ultimately develop cultural projects that meet the territory’s real needs and to become a benchmark in the neighbourhood’s artistic setting.

2.1. Open activities

We propose activities that appeal to a broad range of audiences, inviting different communities to inhabit Nau Ivanow and to glean first-hand knowledge of the projects conducted here.

Observatori en Viu

The Observatori en Viu [Live Observatory] is intended to afford visibility to the creative processes carried out in Nau Ivanow and to open them up to the general public.

The format includes open rehearsals and informal conversations with companies, giving rise to a context where they can learn more about the creative processes, meet the teams and make contact with the diverse range of languages and artistic methodologies.

Family workshops

In the course of the year, open workshops are also staged for families with a view to informing them about creative languages and methodologies. Nau opens its doors to the neighbourhood to show people what goes on behind closed doors, generating a context where families can experience the space first-hand with the help of professionals from the sector.

These workshops are conceived as a space for research for artists as well, offering the possibility of exploration and discovery with a different audience.

 2.2. Collaborative projects

These are projects underpinned by the practice of art and which are designed jointly with the facilities or the organisations in the territory, catering to a specific detected need or desire.

Generating sustained relationships directly with these facilities opens up the possibility of affording projects continuity over time and for the bonds generated to last beyond the actual project.

One noteworthy result of these relationships is the Lab Migrante [Migrant Lab], an artistic project mapping the territory between the Casal de Gent Gran de Navàs [Navàs Senior Citizens’ Centre] and Joves el Click [el Click Young People], or the Cuines del món [World Cuisine] project in collaboration with the AFA [Students’ Families Association] of the L’Estel school.
